Chasing Omaha Regional Projections – 5/15/2013

CWS Plate

Every week, our co-founder and publisher, Craig Amick, will release his regional projections. These projections are a snap-shot of what the bracket might look like if it were released today based on the criteria that the NCAA Tournament Committee uses to build the field of 64 in June. These projections are not a prediction of what the bracket will look like in June, so every week we will get closer and closer to the final picture.

The national seeds have a number next to them in parenthesis and the projected super regional match-ups are side-by-side. Projected conference champions are in italics.

Please post any questions or comments below or send a tweet to Craig at @craigamick_co.

Here is a little bit of analysis:

National Seeds:  Pretty straight up this week. South Carolina and North Carolina State both have a potential opportunity to move up to that line, but it’s likely that these are the eight national seeds.

Regional Hosts:  This isn’t as straight up. Right now, there’s a geographical need for either Kansas State or Arkansas to host. At this point, it looks like Kansas State has the upper hand on that. They knocked Mississippi State out of the last host spot. It’s still possible that Arkansas and Mississippi State could host and not out of the question that Mississippi or South Alabama could.

Bubble:  The bubble is huge at this point. Really, none of the No. 3 seeds, or even Rice on the 2-line, is safe. This weekend will go a long way toward sorting all of that out.

We’ll have new projections Monday, Friday and Sunday of next week.

I think if Alabama wins a game at Vanderbilt they will be in good shape do you agree?

  2. Matt Mathis

How is New Mexico predicted as a three again? Highest batting avg. in the nation, top five in five other categories. Beat the crap out of all their conference opponents, split with Arkansas in a game that they had a chance to win. Played all of their out of conference opponents tough. Ranked in the top 20 in two of the polls, top 30 in the other three. I do not understand.

  3. Mike Brown

Can a team like Nebraska do anything at this point to earn a regional bid?

  4. Brandon

Don’t you think Auburn has a shot? Already a win against Arkansas after just winning series against Ole Miss and Florida I see them at least as a 3 seed.

  5. Arkansas shouldn’t be a 2-seed. I would have them as a very mid-low range 3. Right now, I have them as my “first team out”. If Bryant and Arkansas played a nine-game series, Bryant would win 5.

    • Randy, Arkansas is closer to hosting than they are a 2-seed. RPI is skewed against the teams in the middle part of the country this year because of how down the Texas teams are. I think the committee will have to look at the area in the middle separate of the RPI.

  6. Jay Williams

Love the website and projections. As a UNC fan, I’m a little concerned about their recent slide. Do you see any way that they can fall out of the National Seed territory?

  7. Monty Gano

Why would Rice be sent Northwest to Oregon rather than a regional somewhere in the Southeast or Manhattan?

  8. Jeff williams

How do you see Florida with our mediocre record? We have a strong RPI and SOS but Im thinking the weekend lost to Georgia puts us out as of now? Im thinking a solid win against texas am in the opening round to get 30 will be enough but do you see us out if we lose and or lose to Vandy?
